Matisse Merchandise

‘Matisse: Drawing Life’ was the most extensive exhibition of Henri Matisse’s prints and drawings ever shown. To complement the exhibition, a range of merchandise was produced for our Gallery Store. The brief required the branding to be simple, modern and able to compliment his artworks without overwhelming them. Beton font was chosen as the main title because slab serifs were thought of as ‘modern’ in the early 1900s, just as Matisse’s art was modern during this period. The font weight is reminiscent of Matisse’s bold, deliberate lines seen in his pencil sketches, while the sub-heading is a clean sans serif, quietly commandeering attention.
