Jemima Wyman Pattern Bandits

‘Pattern Bandits’ enticed children to explore and engage with a multi-patterned space where they could create their own patterns with blocks, paper, material and even themselves. Creative activities included: a spinning mandala using coloured pieces of paper, a bandana with markers and stencils and a ‘make your own’ shapes with patterned blocks.

The artist’s desired activities were scaled back, due to budgetary constraints, causing me to liaise with printers to find solutions that were both creative and cost effective. Redrawing and tessellating block patterns, and determining the amount and shape of blocks that would fit the tables in the Children’s Art Centre was also challenging.

Jemima Wymans’ artwork hangs on the wall in the spinning mandala activity area to inspire the children to make their own collage, which can be incorporated into the spinning wallpaper.
